Justin Burr Is Not Above The Law

Dylan Frick, Chairman 8th District Democratic Party

August 30, 2017

We cannot allow this dangerous, violent rhetoric to be perpetuated by a sitting legislator. Representative Burr is a bail bondsman who, by profession, preys on the poor and profits from arrests. Burr has no respect for his constituents, nor for our Constitution. Earlier this year Burr introduced a bill allowing motorists to plow into crowds of peaceful protesters. After Heather Heyer was murdered in Charlottesville by being ran over by a white supremacist, Burr doubled down on his bill.

Now, Burr is advocating for bringing back electric chairs and gas chambers. In his Facebook post, with a photo of the electric chair, he wrote #MakeTheChairGreatAgain, seemingly indicating that he believes murder is a great thing.

Representative Burr is no better than the murderers, rapists and drug dealers that he bails out of jail. In Houston, we see people helping each other, regardless of income or race. In Stanly County, we see our representative advocating for gas chambers. We deserve real, compassionate leadership.

Justin Burr is not above the law, and he should resign immediately. Furthermore, we call on our legislators in Raleigh to join other states and do away with our for-profit bail bonding system that disproportionately hurts low-income and minority communities.
